Some Ideas of Novels I’m brainstorming…
Lately I’ve had more ideas on fiction books I’d like to write.
I know, that’s no big surprise… lol ๐
In the past few years I’ve been writing contemporary sweet romance using a pen name, so there hasn’t been too much historical romance or historical fiction written under Lorna Faith for quite some time.
I have begun to brainstorm a new fiction series.
Read more details below on what I’m brainstorming…
A New Fiction Series I’m Brainstorming…
First of all, I should mention that there are other fiction books I’ve got in the works.
For all you wonderful readers who have read Book #1 and #2 in the Russia to the Canadian West series, I just want to let you know I haven’t forgotten about writing the last book in the series. However, I will let you know that so far I haven’t had a really good big picture idea about that last book yet, so as of this writing Book #3 in that series is still on hold.
Also, I have mentioned that I will be working on a Middle Grade / YA series of fiction books that is set in the 1970s. The inspiration for this series, was from my childhood years in a small farming town in Northern Canada. So far, I’ve been brainstorming the characters, the towns people and I’ve been trying to get a good sense of the theme of this series overall. But I do know that it begins with an orphan girl who is adopted into a farming family. This series is in the outlining stage as of this writing.
Another idea for novels that I’m sketching ideas for right now is a Sweet Regency Romance series. The idea is that each book in this series will be a fairytale retelling. Book 1 is loosely based off the fairytale Cinderella. I’m not sure when this first book will be released as I have other books I’m committed to writing for my pen name romance readers.
It’s slow going, but I feel like I will be back to writing some fiction under my Lorna Faith author name. I am brimming over with ideas and doing my best to keep up with the all ๐
I’d love to hear which book or series you’re most excited to read. Please, leave a comment below. I’d love to hear from you!
Some of the Most Challenging Parts of Being an Indie Author
In the last few weeks I’ve been working a ton of details for my Historical Sweet Romance book release Longing for Love.
As I’ve worked on all the writing, rewriting, editing and then relearning how to self-publish on Vellum, I was reminded again that Indie Authors wear all sorts of hats.
Even though I love almost everything about being a Indie Author, sometimes when a new book is coming out and there is so much to do, it can feel overwhelming.
Have you ever felt this way as you write, self-publish and market your books?
Thoughts on Being an Indie Author and Wearing So Many Hats…
For myself I think the most challenging part of being an indie author, is wearing so many hats all at once. Which is strange for me to say, since I really do love each part this self-publishing business.
Here’s a breakdown of what I found challenging in the past few weeks to get this new ebook self-published.
Editing: I needed to edit the book. I’m grateful that my editor was super patient with all my mistakes and many overused words and phrases. It took a few weeks of going over the manuscript with a fine tooth comb, but finally the book came together.
Formatting and Self-Publishing: I’ve only used Vellum once before, so it was a little like a relearning process for me. I had to upload the eBook three times onto Amazon and Kobo to get it right. It takes patience as authors as we are still learning how to format and get the requirements needed for each digital retailer done correctly.
Marketing and Promoting: I’ve needed to plan my launch of the book. ie. emailing my readers; planning out giveaways for the first week of the book launch, etc. All of this takes time.
Some authors have a lot of help. Right now, I pretty much do everything. The only part that I contract out for freelance work is the editing and sometimes the book cover(I’ve been taking a course on book cover design, which has been helpful). I’ve been learning how to write better emails, how to set up giveaways and I’ve even been learning about Facebook Ads, even though I haven’t tried that yet. Maybe at some point.
Blogging/Website: I need to update my website and blog to reflect the new books I’ll be writing soon and the ones that have now been published.
Social Networking: I try to do this for a few minutes everyday, but some days this is the hardest part for me to get to. When I’m finally all done with the other stuff above, I still have 4 kids and aย husband, so it can be hard to get around to the social media stuff in a day.
All the points above are all part of the process of being an Indie Author. I do love learning each part, it’s only when I need to wear so many different hats at the same time, that it seems overwhelming.
The way I learn to overcome the feeling of overwhelm, is:
1. Remembering my why: What’s my passion for writing and self-publishing my books? Why do I want to want to do this long-term? I remember I want to write the stories that are burning a hole inside me. And I also want to earn extra income for my family. Those two reasons are really important to me.
2.Break down my next steps into bite sized pieces: I have to break down what my next steps are by writing them down in a spiral notebook. When I put my next ‘to-do’ list into small chunks, it seems more doable and the feeling of overwhelm seems to fade away. Try it. You might be surprised at how much doing this helps you too!
Still, I wouldn’t trade this for the world. I love it when another new book is released into the world… it’s such a great feeling! It’s also motivating to begin the next book.
That’s what I’m doing today… writing the next book in this series. I’m excited to see how all the Harper family is going to blossom in this small island town ๐
How about you… do you sometimes feel overwhelmed with all the hats you wear as an author?ย Please share in the comments below. I’d love to hear your thoughts!

Highlights of the Interview:
- How to uncover the story contributions of every element that goes onto the screen and onto the soundtrack across many multi-media disciplines.
- Stephan discovered and was inspired by the fact that he could make things from young on and later was influenced by info com games, table top gaming and pulp Sci Fi novels.
- The flow of an animation feature film and how the pipeline of production works.
- How the writer’s job in feature film animation starts with a written treatment so that the structure is there – which often includes a screenplayย as well. Then the Head of story will be doing mood boards and story beat boards while that’s going on and might even draw some sequences.
- It’s not until the script is approved to go into reels that you get all of your board artistsย assigned on the team to then go draw the entire film and have an editor assigned to cut it into a reel.
- T.V. animations sometimes have scripts upfront before they get to storyboarding.
- Storytelling is collaborative in T.V. and Feature Film animations.
- Tips on how a spec screenwriter and novelists can be writers for animated films, you need experience – if you’ve shown talent for the craft and some degree of whimsy and humour in their work.
- For writers who really want to write for animation, right now there’s a comeback of smaller animation companies who are willing to look at specs – anyone who can contribute to their animation.
- Writing for video games is unique. Players are creating a story in their head all the time as they play and the characters or world building opportunities you give them, has an effect on the gamer.
- There are different Schools of Thought when it comes storytelling in video games. When you create a game you’re trying to get the players to go through an adventure story -and how they get through the obstacle. Some of the best games still bring in interesting bad guys.
- Games aren’t driven by writers, but by programmers and game designers. Then you have the Creative Director who brings it all together. Usually a game starts with a concept and then a team is put together that may include a writer. Interesting story with great game play is something like BioShock.
- Interplay between the game and the story. Designer and writer are paired up in most meetings to craft that as a team for pacing and flow andย how to tell the best story.
- Stephan mentions thatย one of his fiction books will be released on a new mobile platform called getbound.io – which is releasing later thisย summer. Serialized short fiction with some illustration that goes along with the prose. And the prose will be read in audiobook style. Broken down into short chunks like the old pulp fiction. You can read, listen and look on the bus to work, etc.
